ASVAB TEST: The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Test is the most widely used career assessment multiple aptitude test in the world. The test has a strong history of assessing the ability to learn new skills and to predict success in a wide variety of civilian and military occupations. This test is sponsored by the Department of Defense and is a vocational aptitude battery consisting of ten short tests which cover the areas of General Science, Mathematical Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension and Electronics Information. The results of the ten individual tests are combined to provide three academic and four occupational composite scores. The academic composites are Verbal, Mathematical and Academic Ability; the occupational composites are Mechanical and Crafts, Business and Clerical, Electronics and Electrical, and Health, Social and Technology. The ASVAB scores will give the student an idea of his/her abilities compared to those of other young people of their age and grade level. The test will be held in Chancellor Hall at 7:45 on Thursday, December 7, 2006. Students should pick up a permission slip from Mr. Pina in the Career Center, have it signed by teachers and parents and returned to Mr. Pina. Students will also pick up a parents' announcement sheet that explains the reason and purpose for the test.

COSMETOLOGY: West Valley has a fabulous Cosmetology Program that has become very popular with high school students; however, due to this popularity the upcoming spring semester is already full. Interested students should go to WVOC on Tuesday or Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. to take the reading test and have their names placed on a waiting list for future semesters. Please be aware that seniors will be placed on the adult list for the following semester. These students will have a better chance of being accepted into the program as an adult, as the Cosmetology Department is accepting more adults in the program than high school students. Also, due to the fact that this is such a strenuous program that requires 24 hours of attendance per week, we suggest that students wait until their senior year to attend. Also, all students will need to purchase their own kits and uniforms.

COLLECTION OF PORTFOLIOS: Since the portfolio program has been discontinued, I am asking teachers to send to the Career Center, C-8, the brown temporary portfolio folders in their classrooms. The students who were in your homeroom last year have valuable papers such as community service hours, certificates of achievement, specialized electives, resumes and outstanding assignments in these folders. If you are new and are not familiar with these folders, please ask a neighbor teacher or come to the Career Center to see me, Mr. Pina. When I receive all the folders, I will provide an orderly process for the recovery of each student's important items. Remember, the 20-hour community service requirement is still in force for seniors. Seniors must complete this requirement to participate in graduation. I will manage, verify and enforce the completion of this requirement out of the Career Center. All other students (9th - 11th graders) may continue to do community service, but they must keep their records at home until they turn them in as seniors.
