Humanitas Academy of Education and Human Services
About the Humanitas Program

COORDINATOR: Kathie Donner

Mission Statement
Humanitas Academy of Education and Human Services is a collaborative environment where students engage in interdisciplinary project-based learning. Students connect to the classroom, school and local community through real life experiences, hands on learning, partnerships, and peer interaction. Humanitas teachers empower students by providing them opportunities for developing personal accountability, leadership skills, civic responsibility and a global consciousness. Humanitas Academy graduates are critical thinkers who have a strong sense of identity, value learning, and see opportunities for personal growth.

The Humanitas Academy is a small learning community that has been developed by expanding the highly successful Humanitas Program that has existed at our school for many years. By focusing on the humanistic aspects of the pre-existing program, the Humanitas Academy will help students gain an understanding of the socioeconomic, psychological, and political foundations of society and explore how to use that information to meet human needs through education and human services. Through curriculum concentrated on themes relating to education and human services, students will develop their own identities and explore careers in teaching, social work, special needs, psychology, health, counseling and public service.

Welcome to the Humanitas Academy

Why should you choose the Humanitas Academy?

Since its inception in 1985 Humanitas has partnered with prominent educational, business, cultural and social organizations.  We receive continual support from The Urban Education Partnership, a Los Angeles organization dedicated to the instruction of students in innovative, interdisciplinary small learning communities.  The J.P. Getty Foundation, the Los Angeles Musuem of Art, the Los Angeles Music Center, L.A. Food Bank, American Cancer Society, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Devonshire PreSchool, Germain Elementary and Moorpark Community College are among the many institutions providing time and resources to our Humanitas teachers and students.

Field Trips

One special opportunity for Humanitas students exists as field trips. Each year, the students travel to various museums and events. For next year's field trips, contact one of the teachers for the grade level of interest.

Awards Assembly

Each semester all Humanitas students are treated to an awards assembly, in Chancellor Hall. The Humanites Student Organization sponsors this spectacular event, wherein students are recognized for their achievements in Chatsworth High School's Humanitas Program. In addition, HSO members raise money and treat the entire organization to refreshments. Please help us support wonderful programs, such as these, by helping support Humanites Student Organization.

Humanites Student Organization

HSO is the student government of the CHS Humanites Program. They meet every Monday in G43, Ms. Hernandez' room. For more information, click here for more information.
