Welcome to Honors English 9A!
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I am excited to welcome you and your Chancellors to an enriching year of exploration and discovery in our Honors English 9A class! Our theme for the semester is Survival, which we will explore through various texts, discussions, and projects. Our reading list kicks off with the powerful novel Refugee by Alan Gratz, which follows the harrowing journeys of three young refugees from different parts of the world. Through their stories, your Chancellors will gain a deeper understanding of the struggles and resilience of those seeking safety and a new life.
Additionally, I am thrilled to share that thanks to your generous donations through DonorsChoose, we now have 95 copies of Media and Me: A Guide to Critical Media Literacy for the class! This important resource will help your Chancellors develop critical thinking skills as they navigate the complexities of media in today’s world. Together, we will explore how media shapes our perceptions and influences our decisions.
Our Project-Based Learning (PBL) unit will focus on Fast Fashion, where Chancellors will examine the impact of the clothing industry on the environment and global communities. This project encourages critical thinking about the choices we make as consumers and challenges them to find creative, sustainable solutions.
In our textbook unit, "What Does it Take to Survive?", we will dive into stories and real-life accounts of individuals who have faced extreme challenges. Your Chancellors will analyze what it truly means to survive and the qualities that make survival possible, both physically and emotionally.
Finally, our ERWC Unit, "Extreme Sports - What’s the Deal?", invites Chancellors to explore the world of extreme sports and question the motivations behind participating in such high-risk activities. Through reading, writing, and debate, they will delve into the psychological and social aspects of pushing physical limits.
We are looking forward to an engaging and insightful semester where your Chancellors will explore what it means to survive in a variety of contexts. Thank you again for your incredible support, and I look forward to a great year of learning and growth!
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Grofsky Ramos
