Right-hander Christian Lopez (6-1), bottom right, worked 4-2/3 innings, right-hander Steven Karkenny pitched 2-1/3 scoreless innings and the host Chancellors defeated El Camino Real, 2-1, today in a West Valley League game.
Chatsworth (22-4, 8-1 in league play) pulled into a virtual tie for first place in the WVL with the Conquistadores (15-11, 9-1). The Chancellors have a make-up game against Granada Hills on Saturday at noon at Chatsworth and a victory would give them a share of the league title. However, the Chancellors probably would receive the higher seeding from the league for the City Section playoffs because of their superior overall record and ranking.
The Chancellors took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a run-scoring double by center fielder Aaron Brown.
Chatsworth made it 2-0 in the fourth inning on a pinch-hit, run-scoring single by Chris Carlin, top right.
El Camino Real cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fifth inning and left the tying run stranded at third base in the seventh inning.
Junior Varsity: Ricky Bernal (8-0) earned a victory and a save by reentering the game in the seventh inning and the Chancellors (21-1, 10-0) defeated host El Camino Real, 14-11, in the West Valley League finale.
First baseman Mark Fierro had two hits, including his first home run, and right fielder Tim Han hit two doubles and drove in five runs.
Shortstop Scott Voets, catcher Chris DeVito, designated hitter Kiefer Kofman and left fielder Raul Camas each had two hits. DeVito drove in two runs.
The Chancellors scored seven runs in the seventh inning but El Camino Real answered with five in the bottom half of the inning.
