Senior Daniel Simmons gave up three hits and struck out five in his varsity debut, and junior shortstop Mike Moustakas and junior outfielder Bobby Coyle each had three hits and four runs batted in to lead the Chancellors past the Lancaster Eagles, 12-0, in a steady drizzle Monday at Chatsworth in an Easton Southern California Showcase game halted in the fifth inning because of the 10-run rule.
No Chatsworth team from 1980 to the present had started a season with consecutive shutout victories. Lancaster dropped to 1-1.
Simmons, a 6-foot-5 right-hander, struck out the side in the first inning. He had a 6-3 record with a 2.09 earned-run average with the JV team in 2005.
Because rain forced the postponement of other tournament games, the Chancellors won't play again until Wednesday against an opponent to be determined after today's make-up games.
JV defeats Lancaster, 10-4: Sophomore right-hander Trevor Takeyama struck out seven in 5-2/3 innings and junior shortstop David Whetstone had four hits to lead the Chancellors (2-0) in a six-inning game at Lancaster.
Sophomore center fielder Mike Hasenfus had two triples for the Chancellors and junior right fielder Luis Ramirez had one.
