A two-run single to right field by junior shortstop Mike Moustakas ended a scoreless tie in the bottom of the second inning and the Chancellors went on to defeat the Kennedy Cougars, 4-1, Thursday in a nonleague game.
The Cougars (2-3) cut the deficit to 2-1 in the third inning, scoring a run while the Chancellors (5-1) turned a double play from sophomore first baseman James Wharton to Moustakas to pitcher Daniel Simmons, who covered first base.
Simmons, a senior right-hander, was replaced with one out and one on in the fourth inning by senior right-hander Jonathan O'Leary (pictured), who went the rest of the way to record his second career varsity victory and first this season.
Senior catcher Kyle Barbato had a run-scoring single to left field in a two-run third inning.
The Chancellors play host to Narbonne on Saturday at 11 a.m. in a first-round game of the Chatsworth tournament.
JV defeats Kennedy, 5-0: Junior left-hander Troy Cassidy (2-0) struck out nine to earn the shutout in a nonleague game at Kennedy.
Junior shortstop David Whetstone had three hits and junior right fielder Luis Ramirez had two for the Chancellors.
Chatsworth is off Saturday and opens West Valley League play at Cleveland on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
