The Chancellors erased an early deficit when junior designated hitter Mike Moustakas (pictured) hit a grand slam with two outs in the fourth inning and went on to defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers, 5-3, Tuesday afternoon at Chatsworth in the West Valley League opener for both teams.
It was the second homer of the season for Moustakas and it gave the Chancellors a 4-1 lead. Senior catcher Kyle Barbato drove in junior right fielder Bobby Coyle from third base with a single to center field in the fifth inning. Coyle led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a bunt by senior second baseman Oscar Gutierrez and to third on a flyout by senior left fielder Oliver Padre.
Senior right-hander Josh Ravin (3-1) went into the sixth inning before giving way to senior right-hander Jonathan O'Leary, who got the Chancellors out of a bases-loaded jam.
The Chancellors (7-1), who play at Cleveland (6-2) on Thursday at 3 p.m., have won nine consecutive league openers.
JV beats Cleveland, 7-1: Sophomore right-hander Trevor Takeyama gave up three hits and struck out five to lead the Chancellors (5-1-1) at Cleveland in a WVL opener for both teams.
Junior outfielder Jon Shields, sophomore outfielder Patrick O'Connell and sophomore catcher Richard Palacios each had two hits for the Chancellors, and junior shortstop David Whetstone had a two-run double.
