RESEDA -- Junior third baseman Matt Dominguez hit a grand slam with two out in the top of the seventh inning and the Chancellors defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers, 5-2, Thursday in a West Valley League game at Cleveland.
The Chancellors (8-1, 2-0 in league play) trailed, 2-1, through six innings. Sophomore third baseman Matt Moreno led off the seventh with a pinch-hit single to center field but was erased on a double play. Freshman first baseman Andy Weissberg reached on an infield hit, sophomore James Wharton was hit by a pitch while pinch-hitting and junior designated hitter Mike Moustakas walked.
That brought up Dominguez (No. 3 in picture at right), who had doubled in the first inning, and he sent a 1-and-1 curve ball over the left-field fence for his second home run this season.
The Cavaliers (6-3, 0-2) had taken a 2-0 lead against senior right-hander Daniel Simmons (2-0) in the fourth inning but the Chancellors pulled to within one run when junior center fielder Nick Devian doubled, advanced to third and scored on a balk in the fifth inning.
Simmons went 6-1/3 innings before being replaced by junior right-hander Trent Jones, who worked out of a bases-loaded jam to pick up the save.
The Chancellors play host to Santa Barbara on Saturday at 11 a.m. in a Chatsworth tournament game.
JV loses to Cleveland: The Chancellors gave up three unearned runs in the top of the eighth inning and lost, 5-2, to the Cavaliers in a WVL game at Chatsworth.
Junior left-hander Troy Cassidy (2-1) had five strikeouts in 7-1/3 innings. Junior center fielder Mike Hasenfus and sophomore catcher Richard Palacios each had two hits, and junior shortstop David Whetstone had a double for the Chancellors (5-2-1, 1-1).
Chatsworth plays a nonleague game at Palisades on Saturday.
