Senior second baseman Oscar Gutierrez drove in three runs to back up junior right-hander Trent Jones and the Chancellors defeated Santa Barbara, 8-1, Saturday in a Chatsworth tournament game at Chatsworth.
The Chancellors (9-1) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a run-scoring groundout by freshman catcher Carlos Escobar and a run-scoring double to left-center field by freshman shortstop Kasey Toven.
Chatsworth extended the lead to 3-0 in the third inning when junior right fielder Bobby Coyle doubled to left field, senior left fielder Oliver Padre advanced him to third with a bunt and Gutierrez (bottom photo) picked up the run batted in with a grounder to shortstop.
The Chancellors added two runs in the fifth after junior third baseman Matt Dominguez led off with a single to left field, Coyle (top photo) doubled to right-center field and Padre walked to load the bases. Gutierrez followed with a single to left field that drove in Dominguez and sophomore designated hitter Matt Moreno drove in Coyle with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Padre's run-scoring single to right field, Gutierrez's run-scoring single to center field and Moreno's sacrifice fly to right field put the Chancellors ahead, 8-0, after six innings.
The Dons (5-2) mounted their only serious rally against Jones (3-0), who went six-plus innings and gave up four hits, in the seventh inning, when they scored. Senior right-hander Jonathan O'Leary closed the game.
Chatsworth continues West Valley League play Monday with a 3 p.m. game at Granada Hills.
JV defeats Palisades 6-1: Freshman left-hander Michael Renner (1-1) gave up one hit and struck out six in five innings and freshman third baseman Andrew Klausmeier was four for four with two doubles and a triple to lead the Chancellors (6-2-1) in a nonleague game at Palisades.
Sophomore right-hander Cameron Milstein gave up one hit in two innings and second baseman Ryan Merrill had a run-scoring double for the Chancellors.
The Chancellors play host to Granada Hills on Monday at 3 p.m. in a WVL game.
