April 11, 2006

LAS VEGAS -- Junior right-hander Trent Jones (6-0) worked a complete game and junior shortstop Mike Moustakas hit a two-run home run to lift the Chancellors over Centennial of Bakersfield, 12-4, Tuesday in a Purple Division I pool-play game of the Durango tournament.

It was the 13th consecutive victory for the Chancellors (16-1), who finished 3-0 in the pool and will play Centennial of Las Vegas in a semifinal game Wednesday at 5 p.m.

The Chancellors took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning, with senior left fielder Oliver Padre providing a run-scoring double and senior second baseman Oscar Gutierrez a run-scoring single.

Centennial pulled to within one in the bottom half but the Chancellors answered with four runs in the second inning, two coming in on a two-run single to left field by junior third baseman Matt Dominguez and one on a run-scoring double to center field by Gutierrez (bottom photo).

Dominguez walked in the fourth inning and scored from third base on junior right fielder Bobby Coyle's single to right field to put Chatsworth ahead, 9-0.

The Chancellors added three in the seventh inning when freshman first baseman Andy Weissberg doubled and scored on sophomore designated hitter Matt Moreno's hit to center field. Moustakas then hit a two-run drive to right field, his second homer of the tournament and fourth this season.

Jones (top photo) settled down after the first inning to remain undefeated in his first varsity season.
