LAS VEGAS -- Senior right-hander Jonathan O'Leary (3-0) struck out seven and the Chancellors defeated Centennial of Bakersfield, 13-3, Wednesday in the Purple Division I championship game of the Durango tournament.
The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule. It was the third consecutive time the Chancellors (18-1) won the tournament and their 16th consecutive victory in the event. The Chancellors are 18-1 all-time in the Durango tournament.
Chatsworth beat Centennial of Bakersfield for the second day in a row, both by lopsided scores, and improved to 4-0 against the Hawks, who started this season with 13 wins in a row. They have outscored Centennial, 36-11, in the last three meetings.
The Chancellors wasted little time jumping ahead, and giving O'Leary (bottom photo) breathing room, with junior shortstop Mike Moustakas (top photo) blasting a home run to right field leading off the game. It was his fifth of the tournament and seventh this season.
Junior third baseman Matt Dominguez reached on an error and junior right fielder Bobby Coyle followed with a home run to right field, his second this season. Senior second baseman Oscar Gutierrez singled to left field with two outs and junior center fielder Nick Devian tripled to right field to put Chatsworth ahead, 4-0.
Chatsworth went right back to work in the second inning, scoring five times, the big blow coming on a three-run double by Gutierrez to left-center field.
The Chancellors, who have won 15 in a row, took a 13-1 lead with four runs in the fourth inning, with Devian getting his second triple of the game.
Chatsworth reached the title game with a five-inning, 14-3 victory over Centennial of Las Vegas earlier in the day.
Junior left-hander Troy Cassidy earned his first varsity victory with a five-hitter. He was supported by a 15-hit attack, including three each by Coyle and Moustakas, who hit two home runs to right field and finished with five runs batted in.
The Chancellors scored eight runs in the top of the first inning, capped by Moustakas' three-run drive.
Freshman catcher Carlos Escobar Jr. drove in a run with a double to center field in a two-run second inning by Chatsworth, Dominguez hit a solo homer to left field in the third, his fifth of the year, and Moustakas hit a two-run shot in the fourth ahead of Coyle's run-scoring double.
Chatsworth returns to West Valley League play Tuesday at El Camino Real at 3 p.m.
