LAKE BALBOA -- Senior right-hander Daniel Simmons (top photo) gave up one hit and struck out nine, and junior third baseman Matt Dominguez (middle photo) and sophomore first baseman James Wharton each hit a home run to lead the Chancellors over Birmingham, 6-0, Thursday in a West Valley League game at Birmingham.
It was the fourth shutout this season for Simmons (5-0), who was staked to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Dominguez's homer to left-center field, his seventh. Dominguez, who also hit a double, set a Chatsworth career record with 25 home runs, breaking a three-way tie with older brother Jason and junior shortstop Mike Moustakas.
Wharton (bottom photo), who had two hits, put the Chancellors (22-2 overall, 9-1 in WVL play) ahead, 3-0, with a drive to left-center field in the second inning. Senior second baseman Oscar Gutierrez was three for three, including a run-scoring double, and junior center fielder Nick Devian had two hits, including a run-scoring single.
The Chancellors are off Saturday and return to WVL play Tuesday by playing host to Cleveland at 3 p.m.
JV Defeats Birmingham: Junior left-hander Troy Cassidy gave up two hits and the Chancellors beat the Patriots, 10-0, in five innings at Chatsworth.
Freshman Andrew Klausmeier, junior Jon Shields and junior David Whetstone each had multiple hits for the Chancellors.
