Right-hander Trent Jones (top photo) went the distance and got long-ball help from Matt Dominguez (middle photo) and Mike Moustakas (No. 11, bottom photo) to help the top-seeded Chancellors defeat No. 16 Verdugo Hills, 7-0, Wednesday at Chatsworth in a first-round game of the Los Angeles City Section Championship Division playoffs.
The Chancellors (28-2), who have won 10 games in a row, will play host to No. 8 Banning (21-10) in a quarterfinal game Friday. Banning advanced with a 2-0 victory over No. 9 Poly.
Jones (9-1), a junior in his first varsity season, gave up three hits en route to his fifth shutout, the second most in a season by a Chancellor pitcher behind Justin Cassel's eight in 2003. It was the 12th shutout for Chatsworth, tying the team season record set in 2003.
Chatsworth jumped ahead, 2-0, in the second inning on a two-run line-drive single to left-center field by junior center fielder Nick Devian.
The Chancellors extended the lead to 3-0 on a third-inning leadoff home run to center field by junior third baseman Dominguez, his ninth this season and 27th of his three-year varsity career.
Junior shortstop Moustakas drilled a three-run shot to center field in the sixth to give the Chancellors a 6-0 advantage. It was his 14th this season and 28th of his three-year varsity career.
The Chancellors added a run in the inning when Dominguez singled to left field, junior right fielder Bobby Coyle doubled to right field and senior left fielder Oliver Padre hit a sacrifice fly to right field.
