Former Chancellor right-hander Justin Cassel has agreed to terms with the Chicago White Sox, who selected the UC Irvine junior in the seventh round of the June 6 amateur draft.
Cassel (pictured) owns several Chatsworth pitching career records, including strikeouts (260), games pitched (49) and shutouts (12). He threw a one-hitter in a 3-0 win over Carson to win the 2003 Los Angeles City Section title and secure a national championship for the Chancellors, the first of two in a row by the program.
In three seasons with the Anteaters, Cassel had a 20-16 record and a 3.57 earned-run average. His best season was 2005, when he was 9-4 with a 3.54 ERA.
Cassel, 6 feet 1 and 200 pounds, is the third of three brothers to join the professional sports ranks. Jack, a former pitcher at Kennedy High, is playing with the Portland Beavers, the San Diego Padres' triple-A affiliate in the Pacific Coast League, and Matt, a former baseball and football standout at Chatsworth and a former quarterback at USC, is playing with the New England Patriots of the NFL.
