Chancellor senior third baseman Matt Dominguez hit a three-run home run in the top of the first inning to get Team USA rolling in an 8-2 victory over Mexico on Monday in a semifinal game of the baseball junior world championships in Sancti Spiritus, Cuba.
Chancellor senior shortstop Mike Moustakas, who is playing left field for Team USA, scored two runs, including one after walking in the first inning.
Team USA (5-2) advanced to the gold-medal game Wednesday night at the same venue against the winner of Tuesday’s semifinal between South Korea and Canada.
"After starting the tournament 0-2, we got a little anxious about making the gold-medal game," Dominguez told USA Baseball. "But we defeated two pretty good teams in the past two days to get here. I am looking forward to the [title] game. I think it will be exciting."
It was Dominguez’s second three-run homer in two games. His drive in the seventh inning Sunday helped Team USA defeat previously unbeaten and two-time defending world champion Cuba, 4-0, in the quarterfinals.
