The Chancellors’ quest for yet another great season begins today, when they play host to Alemany at 3 p.m. in the season opener, and Saturday, when they travel to Saugus for an 11 a.m. game. Both games are part of the Easton tournament.
Coach Tom Meusborn (second from left in photo) has 11 players back from a team that finished 30-3 last season and made its fourth consecutive appearance in the Los Angeles City Section final at Dodger Stadium. The Chancellors are coming off the program’s 25th West Valley League title and fourth in a row.
Preseason All-Americans Bobby Coyle (right field), Matt Dominguez (third base) and Mike Moustakas (shortstop), all seniors, lead a solid offense in which senior Nick Devian (center field) and junior James Wharton (first base) also are expected to contribute significantly.
Senior right-hander Trent Jones, 10-1 last season, leads the pitching staff. He is expected to be on the mound today.
Alemany: Finished 14-12 last season, 5-7 in the Mission League (tied for fourth place) ... The Indians reached the second round of the Southern Section Division II playoffs ... The Chancellors and Indians last met in 2006, with Chatsworth winning, 3-2, at UCLA on a run-scoring single up the middle by Devian ... Chatsworth leads the series (since 1980), 4-2.
Saugus: Finished 13-13 last season, 7-8 in the Foothill League (tied for third place) ... The Centurions reached the second round of the Southern Section Division I playoffs ... The Chancellors and Centurions last met in 2004, with host Chatsworth winning, 3-2 ... Chatsworth leads the series (since 1980), 6-0.
