Saturday, March 3, 2007

SAUGUS -- Junior right-hander James Wharton pitched six scoreless innings and senior shortstop Mike Moustakas homered and closed the game, and the Chancellors defeated Saugus, 5-0, today in an Easton tournament game.

The Chancellors (2-0) backed up Wharton (top photo) with four double plays. He gave up four hits and struck out five.

Chatsworth took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Moustakas reached on an error by the first baseman, moved to second base on a wild pitch, to third base on a fielder’s choice and scored on senior right fielder Bobby Coyle’s flyout to right field.

Moustakas’ homer to right field, his second this season and 30th of his career, put the Chancellors ahead, 2-0, in the fifth inning.

Chatsworth added two runs in the sixth inning when senior center fielder Nick Devian walked and Wharton drove him in with a triple down the left-field line. Pinch-hitter Phil McManama (bottom photo), a senior outfielder, singled to right field to knock in Wharton.

Devian walked in the seventh inning and later scored on a fielder’s choice.

Saugus is now 1-1.

The Chancellors continue play in the tournament Monday at Calabasas at 3 p.m.
