LOS ANGELES — Right-hander Trent Jones (3-0) came within an out of his third shutout this season but had to settle for a 4-3 win today over Palos Verdes at UCLA, with relief help from senior shortstop Mike Moustakas, who hit his fifth home run.
Jones (bottom photo) gave up seven hits and struck out three in 6-2/3 innings. He ran his streak of consecutive scoreless innings to 31-2/3, dating to last season. Moustakas (top photo) gave up a run-scoring single, with the run being charged to Jones, before recording the final out on a strikeout.
The Chancellors (4-2) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when senior center fielder Nick Devian (middle photo) drove in senior right fielder Bobby Coyle, who had walked, with a single. Devian finished with two hits.
Moustakas put Chatsworth ahead, 3-0, with his two-run home run in the third inning and scored in the seventh on a wild pitch after reaching with a double.
Junior designated hitter Josh Reece, junior left fielder Matt Moreno and sophomore catcher Carlos Escobar Jr. each had a hit for the Chancellors.
Chatsworth travels to USC on Thursday for a 6 p.m. nonleague game against Kennedy.
JV: Sophomore left-hander Jerry Lobert, who had eight strikeouts in five innings, and junior right-hander Cameron Milstein, who struck out two in one inning, combined on a no-hitter for the host Chancellors (5-1) in a 5-0 nonleague victory over Alemany.
