Junior right-hander Trevor Takeyama (top photo) struck out six batters over five innings of one-hit ball and the host Chancellors defeated Santa Barbara, 4-0, today in a Chatsworth tournament game.
It was the first varsity victory for Takeyama (1-1), who got relief help from senior Mike Moustakas, the Chancellors’ starting shortstop. Moustakas struck out five in two innings.
The Chancellors (8-3) scored twice in the fourth inning when Moustakas walked, moved to second base on a balk, to third base on a wild pitch and scored on a single to right field by senior right fielder Bobby Coyle. Junior first baseman James Wharton moved Coyle to second base with a sacrifice bunt and junior designated hitter Josh Reece (third photo from top) drove in Coyle with a single to left field.
Chatsworth put up two runs in the sixth after Reece singled, junior left fielder Matt Moreno (second photo from top) reached on a bunt single and sophomore second baseman Kasey Toven (bottom photo) drove in senior Jon Shields, who was pinch-running for Reece, with a single. Senior third baseman Matt Dominguez’s sacrifice fly to left-center field drove in Moreno.
Coyle, Moreno, Moustakas and Reece each had two hits.
It was the fifth shutout this season for the Chancellors and the second in a row. Santa Barbara (8-2) lost its second consecutive game.
Chatsworth continues West Valley League play Monday with game at Taft at 3 p.m.
JV: The Chancellors (9-1-1) defeated Westchester, 21-1, at San Fernando High.
Sophomore shortstop Ryan Cooperstone had three hits, including a triple, drove in three runs and scored four. Junior designated hitter Casey Fry had two triples and knocked in six runs and sophomore outfielder Anthony Flores had two hits.
Sophomore left-hander Jerry Lobert, sophomore left-hander Noah Hershewe and junior right-hander Cameron Milstein combined for four strikeouts and gave up only three hits.
The Chancellors play host to Taft on Monday at 3 p.m. in a West Valley League game.
