WOODLAND HILLS — A third-inning home run to left field by sophomore catcher Carlos Escobar Jr. ended a scoreless tie and sent the Chancellors on the way to a 5-0 victory over Taft today in a West Valley League game.
Senior right-hander Trent Jones improved to 5-0 this season and 15-1 in his two-year varsity career. He carried a perfect game through 5-1/3 innings but had to settle for a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts and one walk. It was his third shutout this season and eighth overall.
The home run by Escobar was his first in two seasons with the Chancellors. He was also hit by a pitch and walked.
Chatsworth (9-3, 3-0 in WVL play) scored four times in the fifth inning with the help of three walks and two batters hit by pitch. Sophomore second baseman Kasey Toven drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk, senior third baseman Matt Dominguez knocked in another with a sacrifice fly and senior shortstop Mike Moustakas drove in one with a single.
Junior left fielder Matt Moreno was hit by a pitch in the sixth inning, stole second base and scored on an error.
The Chancellors play host to the Toreadors (5-7, 0-3) on Thursday at 3 p.m.
JV: Sophomore right-hander Andrew Klausmeier pitched a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts and hit an inside-the-park home run to lead the host Chancellors (10-1-1, 2-0-1 in WVL play) over Taft, 25-0.
Freshman third baseman Angel Calderon hit a grand slam to left field and sophomore shortstop Ryan Cooperstone had a single, double and triple.
The Chancellors play at Taft on Thursday at 3 p.m.
