Monday, April 2, 2007

LAS VEGAS — The Chancellors opened play today in the Purple Division I of the Las Vegas Durango tournament with a 9-2 victory over Honolulu Kamehameha in the afternoon and a 6-1 victory over the host team in a night game.

Sophomore reliever Michael Renner (1-1) rescued the Chancellors from a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fourth inning against Durango by striking out the side. The left-hander struck out four in three innings to pick up his first varsity victory.

Senior shortstop Mike Moustakas homered, his second of the tournament and 14th this season, to tie his school single-season record set last year. He has a school-record 42 over his four-year career.

Senior third baseman Matt Dominguez had a run-scoring single and a run-scoring triple for the Chancellors (12-3), who extended their winning streak in the tournament to 18 games dating to 2003.

Senior center fielder Nick Devian had three hits and junior left fielder Matt Moreno had a double against the Trailblazers in a game stopped after six innings because of time limit.

Junior right-hander Trevor Takeyama (2-1) gave up four hits and went the distance, and Moreno and Moustakas each homered to help the Chancellors defeat Kamehameha.

Moustakas hit a solo homer in the fifth inning and finished four for four. Moreno, who had two hits, also hit a solo home run in the fifth inning. It was his first varsity homer.

Sophomore catcher Carlos Escobar Jr. hit a double for Chatsworth.

The Chancellors take a seven-game winning streak into a 5 p.m. game Tuesday against Bakersfield Centennial.
