The Chancellors slugged their way to an 11-3 victory today over the visiting Patriots in a West Valley League game.
Chatsworth (18-4, 8-0) were led to victory by an offesive assault that included four home runs and eleven hits overall.
Leading the way for the Chancellors was senior center fielder Nick Devian who blasted two, two-run home runs, his second and third of the week and fourth of the season. Devian, sophomore second baseman Kasey Toven, junior pitcher/first baseman James Wharton, and sophomore catcher Carlos Escobar Jr. each had three hits.
The Chancellors battled back from a 2-0 defecit in the third inning when senior third baseman Matt Dominguez drew a walk and scored on a double by right fielder Bobby Coyle. Sophomore catcher Carlos Escobar Jr. put the Chancellors ahead for good with a two-run home run to deep right-center field. Escobar finished the day with two hits, and his home run was his second of the season.
The Chancellors added to their lead in the fourth inning when Devian laced his first two-run home run of the game over the right-center field wall. Wharton got into the act with a solo home run in the fifth, Toven singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch, and was driven in by Devian who drove a Birmingham offering over the left field wall to give the Chancellors an 8-3 lead.
The Chancellors added insurance runs in the sixth inning when senior shortstop Mike Moustakas led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second base with his second stolen base of the game, and scored on sophomore left fielder Matt Moreno's run-scoring single. Escobar Jr. followed with a single which allowed Moreno to advance to third base. Moreno scored on a sacrifice fly ball by senior pinch hitter Jonathan Shields. The Chancellors scored their final run of the game on a James Wharton double.
In addition to driving in two runs and colecting two extra base hits junior right-hander James Wharton (7-1) worked 5.1 innings and picked up the win, striking out six and walking two. Junior right-hander Trevor Takeyama contributed 1.2 innings of relief, and worked his way out of a sixth inning jam by inducing a 5-4-3 double play to get out of the inning.
Saturday's scheduled game against Westchester on Saturday, April 21 has been postposed and will be played next Saturday, April 28 at 11:00 a.m.
JV: Juior left-hander Casey Fry threw a no-hitter in today's contest at Birmingham, Chatsworth''s fourth no-hitter of the season and Fry's second this season, striking out 12 of the 15 batters he faced.
Sophomore center fielder Andrew Klausmeier and junior shortstop Ryan Cooperstone each homered for the Chancellors (14-1-1). Freshman catcher Sean O'Connell and right fielder Patrick O'Connell each collected two hits, the former had a double and a triple.
