RESEDA -- Powered by eight home runs, the Chancellors defeated host Cleveland, 17-3, Monday in a West Valley League game stopped after six innings because of the 10-run rule.
Senior center fielder Nick Devian and senior third baseman Matt Dominguez each homered twice, and senior right fielder Bobby Coyle, senior shortstop Mike Moustakas, junior first baseman James Wharton and junior left fielder Matt Moreno also hit home runs to help tie a school single-game record. The Chancellors hit eight home runs against Granada Hills on March 22.
The Chancellors (19-4 overall, 9-0 in WVL play) put more distance between themselves and second-place Cleveland (18-6, 7-2). The teams meet Thursday at Chatsworth at 3 p.m.
Senior right-hander Trent Jones (9-0) was the beneficiary of the long-ball display by the Chancellors, who have hit 46 home runs, three shy of the school single-season record set in 2004.
Devian, who has five home runs in the last three games, led off the game with a blast over the right-center-field fence and Dominguez followed with a double to the gap in right-center field. Moreno singled to left field with two outs to drive in Coyle, who had walked, from third base and scored when Wharton was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Chatsworth added three runs in the second inning when Dominguez singled and reached third base on Moustakas' double to right-center field. Coyle followed with a home run to right field.
Moustakas' home run accounted for two runs in the fourth inning to put Chatsworth ahead, 8-1.
In the fifth inning, senior designated hitter Ryan Merrill was hit by a pitch and scored on Wharton's triple down the left-field line. Two outs later, Devian and Dominguez hit consecutive home runs to put the Chancellors ahead, 11-3.
Moreno drove a pitch over the left-field fence with one out in the sixth inning, sophomore catcher Carlos Escobar Jr. walked, Merrill walked and Wharton hit a three-run home run. Sophomore second baseman Kasey Toven followed with a single and Dominguez homered to left-center field for the final two runs.
