Senior third baseman Matt Dominguez's second home run of the game, a walk-off drive over the left-center-field fence in the bottom of the eighth inning, lifted the Chancellors over Cleveland, 11-10, today in a West Valley League game.
The Chancellors (20-4 overall, 10-0) pulled three games ahead of the second-place Cavaliers (18-7, 7-3) in league play with five games remaining. It was the seventh consecutive victory for Chatsworth.
Senior shortstop Mike Moustakas and senior right fielder Bobby Coyle also homered for the Chancellors, who established a school single-season record with 50 homers. The previous mark of 49 had been set by the 2004 team.
Chatsworth took a 4-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run single by Moustakas, a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to junior pitcher James Wharton and an error.
They scored four runs in the fourth inning when Moustakas hit a three-run homer, his 17th this season, and Coyle followed with his eighth homer this season.
Chatsworth trailed, 10-8, in the bottom of the sixth inning but Dominguez's leadoff home run to right-center field cut the deficit to one run. Moustakas then tripled to right field and scored on Coyle's single to right field to tie the score, 10-10.
Dominguez, who has nine home runs, and Moustakas each finished with three hits and Coyle had two. Sophomore catcher Carlos Escobar Jr. had a double for the Chancellors.
Senior right-hander Trent Jones (10-0) worked the eighth inning, striking out two batters. He was the winning pitcher against the Cavaliers on Monday in a 17-3 victory in six innings.
The Chancellors finish play in the Chatsworth tournament by playing host to Westchester on Saturday at 11 a.m.
