Tuesday, May 1, 2007

Senior center fielder Nick Devian hit a walk-off grand slam in the sixth inning, and senior right fielder Bobby Coyle and sophomore designated hitter Andy Weissberg also homered to lift the Chancellors over Granada Hills, 14-1, today in a West Valley League game.

The Chancellors collected 16 hits, including the three home runs that extended the team single-season record to 53, two doubles and a triple to back up senior right-hander Trent Jones (11-0), who struck out 11 and moved into eighth place on the Chatsworth all-time list with 21 victories.

Chatsworth (22-4 overall, 11-0 in WVL play) won their season-high ninth consecutive game and swept the three league games with the Highlanders this season.

Granada Hills (13-13, 3-8) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning but the Chancellors answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

With one out, senior third baseman Matt Dominguez was hit by a pitch, advanced to second base on a passed ball and scored on a two-out double to right-center field by Coyle. Junior left fielder Matt Moreno followed with a run-scoring double down the left-field line and scored on a single to left field by sophomore catcher Carlos Escobar Jr.

Senior shortstop Mike Moustakas led off the fifth inning with a single and Coyle homered to right field, his ninth this season, to put Chatsworth ahead, 5-1. Weissberg homered to center field — his second this season — with two outs and Devian drove in a run with a line single to center field.

The Chancellors applied the 10-run rule to the Highlanders in the sixth inning when Moustakas led off with a triple and scored on Coyle’s single. Moreno followed with a single, Escobar Jr. walked and Weissberg walked to force in a run. Sophomore second baseman Kasey Toven, who turned in several excellent defensive plays, drove in a run with a single before Devian hit a grand slam for his seventh home run this season.

Devian finished with three hits and five runs batted in, Coyle was four for four with four RBIs, and Escobar Jr., Moreno, Moustakas and Weissberg each had two hits.

JV: The Chancellors (16-4-1, 7-3-1) lost to the Highlanders, 6-4, at Granada Hills.

Sophomore right-hander Andrew Klausmeier gave up four hits and struck out five with no walks in six innings. He had two hits, including a triple.
