WOODLAND HILLS — Seniors Bobby Coyle and Mike Moustakas each hit two home runs, junior Matt Moreno hit one and junior James Wharton went the distance to help the Chancellors defeat Taft, 8-2, today in a West Valley League game.
The victory clinched at least a share of first place in the WVL for the Chancellors (23-4, 12-0). Chatsworth returns to league with a home game Tuesday against El Camino Real at 3 p.m. This is a change from the schedule that appears on the back of this year’s media guide.
The Chancellors got off to a fast start against the Toreadors when Moustakas, Coyle and Moreno hit consecutive home runs in the first inning. Moustakas and Coyle later homered, giving them 19 and 11 home runs, respectively.
Moustakas tied the state record for career home runs with 47. The Chancellors have 58 homers, nine more than the previous team record set in 2004.
Wharton (7-1) struck out three. Moreno finished with two hits and senior Matt Dominguez hit a double for the Chancellors.
JV: Casey Fry, Cameron Milstein and Jerry Lobert combined on a one-hitter for the Chancellors in a 10-0 five-inning win over Taft at Chatsworth.
Fry hit a home run, and Ryan Cooperstone had two hits, including an inside-the-park home run, and Nick Armogida had a double.
