Tuesday, May 15, 2007

RESEDA — Senior shortstop Mike Moustakas set a state single-season record with his 22nd home run and the Chancellors defeated Cleveland, 16-3, today in a game stopped after five innings because of the mercy rule.

Chatsworth (26-4, 15-0) wrapped up its fifth undefeated West Valley League season and fourth under Coach Tom Meusborn, who is in his 18th season with the program. The previous unbeaten league seasons, all at 15-0, came in 1988 under Bob Lofrano and 2000, 2003 and 2004 under Meusborn.

It was the 13th consecutive victory this season for the Chancellors and 15th in a row against Cleveland dating to 2003. Chatsworth, 63-16 against the Cavaliers since 1980, outscored Cleveland, 44-16, in three games this season.

Moustakas, who extended his state-record total for career home runs to 50, surpassed the single-season mark of 21 set by Chris Walston of Lakeside El Capitan in 2002.

Senior third baseman Matt Dominguez hit a two-run home run in the first inning, his 11th this season and 39th of his career. He hit five homers in Chatsworth’s three-game sweep of Cleveland and Moustakas hit three.

Sophomore catcher Carlos Escobar Jr. led off the fourth inning with a home run, his third, and Moustakas had a two-run double to cap the scoring.

The three home runs increased the Chancellors’ single-season school-record total to 66, the fourth highest in state history. The state record of 75 is shared by Chula Vista Eastlake in 1999 (30 games) and San Diego Rancho Bernardo in 2000 (33 games). The previous Chatsworth record was 49, in 2004. The Chancellors are averaging 2.2 homers per game and, if they are able to extend their season to 34 games by playing in the City Section title game, they would finish with 74 home runs at that pace.

Senior right-hander Trent Jones went the distance to improve to 13-0 this season and 23-1 in his two-year varsity career, moving him into sole possession of fifth place on the Chatsworth all-time list for victories. He joins six other Chatsworth pitchers to have won 13 games or more in a season.

Chatsworth scored four times in the first inning when senior center fielder Nick Devian led off with a single and Dominguez homered. Moustakas followed with a single and advanced to second base on a wild pitch before scoring on Escobar’s double. Sophomore designated hitter Andy Weissberg followed with a run-scoring single.

Moustakas led off the fourth inning with his home run to fuel an eight-run outburst that featured a two-run single by Devian, a run-scoring double by Dominguez and a two-run double by Moustakas, who finished four for four with five runs batted in.

The seeding meeting for the City Section playoffs will be held Saturday. The first round of the playoffs will be May 23.

JV: Sophomore pitcher Andrew Klausmeier hit a three-run home run, junior pitcher Casey Fry had a double and a single, and sophomore second baseman Shawn Meusborn hit a double, but the host Chancellors (19-5-1, 10-4-1) fell to Cleveland, 9-7, in eight innings.
