For the fifth consecutive year, the Chancellors are in the City Section Championship title game at Dodger Stadium.
Top-seeded Chancellors will vie for their seventh City title thanks to an 11-1 victory over No. 4 Palisades today in a semifinal game at Chatsworth that was stopped after 5-1/2 innings because of the mercy rule.
Chatsworth will play West Valley League rival Cleveland (26-8), which beat Kennedy, 12-3, in the other semifinal.
Junior right-hander James Wharton (10-1) gave up three hits and struck out six batters in 4-2/3 innings and senior right-hander Trent Jones struck out two over 1-1/3 innings to help give Chatsworth (29-4) its 16th consecutive victory and send the Dolphins (23-10) to their most lopsided loss this season.
Four pitchers for Palisades, which was 2-5 against San Fernando Valley teams this year, made things easy for Chatsworth by walking 11 batters and hitting six, including one in which a reliever was ejected.
Senior center fielder Nick Devian, who finished with two hits, helped put the final touches on Palisades with a two-run triple in the sixth inning after Wharton was hit by a pitch — for the fourth time in the game — to lead off the inning and sophomore second baseman Kasey Toven singled. Senior third baseman Matt Dominguez was hit by a pitch — for the second time in the game — prompting the ejection of the pitcher, senior shortstop Mike Moustakas and senior right fielder Bobby Coyle each walked, and junior left fielder Matt Moreno wrapped up the victory with a single.
Every batter in Chatsworth’s lineup walked or was hit by a pitch at least once, with Moustakas getting three free passes, and Coyle and Toven twice each.
