Sunday, June 3, 2007

LOS ANGELES — Senior right-hander Trent Jones went the distance and the top-seeded Chancellors defeated Cleveland, 2-1, Saturday in the Los Angeles City Section Championship Division title game at Dodger Stadium.

It is the seventh City title for the Chancellors (30-4), tying them with Fremont and Kennedy for the most, and the sixth under Coach Tom Meusborn, who has been guiding Chatsworth since 1990. In winning their 17th consecutive game, the Chancellors reached the 30-victory plateau for the fifth time in school history, all since 2001. Meusborn is now 50-12 in playoff games and the title tied him for most in City history with Les Haserot, who won six with Fremont between 1939 and 1948.

Jones (15-0) gave up six hits, struck out seven and became the second Chatsworth pitcher to earn that many victories in a season, equaling the record set by Justin Cassel in 2003. Jones improved to 25-1 in two seasons and tied Mike Kunes (25-3) for the fourth spot on the Chatsworth list for career victories.

Senior center fielder Nick Devian and junior first baseman James Wharton each had two hits, including a double apiece, to lead the Chancellors, who also got hits from senior right fielder Bobby Coyle, senior third baseman Matt Dominguez and senior shortstop Mike Moustakas.

Sixth-seeded Cleveland (26-9), which finished second in West Valley League play after being swept by the Chancellors in three league games, took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on a single to left field by senior pitcher Mickey Brodsky (10-3).

The Chancellors responded immediately. Devian doubled down the left-field line and advanced to third base on a wild pitch, and scored on Dominguez’s groundout to the hole at shortstop to tie the score, 1-1. Moustakas followed with a line-drive single to right field and Coyle hit a line drive that went off the first baseman’s glove and rolled toward the second baseman as Moustakas, who was running on the play, steamed into third base.

With two outs, Coyle took off for second base and Brodsky was called for a balk on a pick-off throw to first base, scoring Moustakas to put Chatsworth ahead, 2-1.

Neither team committed an error and the Chancellors, who turned two double plays, had two outstanding catches by Devian on a long drive to left-center field by Brodsky in the fifth inning and by Coyle on an over-the-shoulder grab of a drive by Miguel Castillon in the third, an inning in which the Cavaliers had three singles.

Chatsworth finished the season with 74 home runs, one short of the state single-season record.
