Senior shortstop Mike Moustakas and senior third baseman Matt Dominguez were selected with the Nos. 2 and 12 picks, respectively, in the major league baseball amateur draft Thursday.
Moustakas was selected by the Kansas City Royals and Dominguez by the Florida Marlins, who also selected former Chancellors outfielder and pitcher and current UC Irvine outfielder Bryan Petersen in the fourth round.
Senior outfielder Bobby Coyle was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 19th round and former Chancellors outfielder and pitcher and current Pepperdine closer Jason Dominguez was selected by the Houston Astros in the 31st round.
It is the fifth time since the baseball draft was instituted in 1965 that two players from the same high school are selected in the first round and the first time that both players were selected within the first 12 picks.
Moustakas set state single-season and career home run records with 24 and 52, respectively, and batted .577 with 59 runs batted in. He was selected the Los Angeles City Section player of the year for the second season in a row.
Matt Dominguez, a four-time All-City selection, finished his career with 41 home runs. He batted .443 with a career-best 13 home runs and drove in 42 runs.
Both played significant roles on the U.S. junior national team that earned a silver medal at the world championships in Cuba last summer.
Coyle, a two-time All-City selection, batted .419 with a career-high 14 home runs and 46 RBIs.
Petersen batted .308 with five home runs and 33 runs batted in for the Anteaters this season. UC Irvine is playing Wichita State this weekend in an NCAA super regional series, with the winner advancing to the College World Series.
Jason Dominguez made 28 relief appearances for the Waves this season and had a 2.19 ERA and a West Coast Conference-leading 12 saves. He is Matt Dominguez's brother.
