LAS VEGAS — Junior right-hander Andrew Klausmeier (2-0) struck out 14 batters and gave up three hits, and the Chancellors beat tournament host Las Vegas Durango, 10-2, tonight to sweep their first two games in the event.
In the opener, against Las Vegas Bonanza, senior right-hander Trevor Takeyama (3-1) struck out six in 5-1/3 innings in an 18-2 victory.
The Chancellors (7-2), who improved to 23-2 in the tournament dating to 2003, play Tucson Catalina Foothill on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Durango.
Klausmeier (2-0) was supported with a solid hitting attack that included two hits each by junior shortstop Kasey Toven, junior catcher Carlos Escobar Jr., and senior first baseman James Wharton.
Junior third baseman Ryan Cooperstone had a three-run triple, giving him nine runs batted in for the two tournament games. Senior second baseman Matt Moreno and junior left fielder Andy Weissberg each had a run-scoring double.
Against Bonanza, Toven and Wharton each had a two-run triple in the sixth inning. Toven finished with three hits in five at-bats and Wharton also contributed a single.
Cooperstone drove in four runs, including two with a double in the fifth inning, and Weissberg had a double.
