RESEDA — A grand slam by junior catcher Carlos Escobar Jr. in the fifth inning sent the Chancellors on their way to an 8-6 victory over Cleveland today in the second game of a home-and-home West Valley League series.
The first-place Chancellors (17-4 overall, 7-1 in WVL play) took a two-game lead over the second-place Cavaliers (17-5-1, 5-3) in the league race and clinched the three-game series between the teams. The third game will be played May 9.
Junior left-hander Michael Renner (4-2) picked up the victory and helped the Chancellors defeat the Cavaliers for the 19th consecutive time dating to 2002. Senior right-hander James Wharton pitched the seventh inning to pick up a save.
Junior outfielder Andy Weissberg gave the Chancellors a 3-0 lead with a three-run home run in the first inning.
Escobar finished three for three, including a double in the second inning.
