Senior right-hander Trevor Takeyama tossed a complete game and senior second baseman Matt Moreno hit a grand slam to lead the Chancellors past Palisades, 10-2, today in a second-round game of the Los Angeles City Section Championship Division playoffs at Chatsworth.
The top-seeded Chancellors (27-5) will play host to No. 4 Kennedy (22-10) on Wednesday in a semifinal game at 3 p.m. The Golden Cougars advanced with a 12-0 victory over No. 12 San Pedro.
Takeyama (12-1) struck out 12, walked one and gave up five hits to become the eighth Chatsworth pitcher to win that many games in a season. He is 17-2 in a two-year varsity career.
The Chancellors trailed, 1-0, in the bottom of the second inning when they struck for six runs. Junior right fielder Andy Weissberg and junior catcher Carlos Escobar Jr. hit consecutive singles, and junior center fielder Michael Renner, who finished three for three, followed with a double that drove in Weissberg.
Junior left fielder Andrew Klausmeier, who threw out a runner at the plate trying to score from second base to end the top of the second inning, walked to load the bases and junior shortstop Kasey Toven walked to force in Escobar from third base. Moreno then followed with a shot into the left-field screen for a grand slam.
Toven's single drove in sophomore designated hitter Derek Neely in the third inning, senior first baseman James Wharton hit a towering home run to the street behind the left-center field fence in the fourth and Neely hit a two-run single in the sixth.
JV: The Chancellors defeated host El Camino Real, 1-0, behind a complete game from freshman left-hander David Lira and advanced to a semifinal game.
Lira struck out six and gave up four hits, and made the run scored in the first inning stand up.
Sophomore second baseman Ryan Wittler and sophomore left fielder Adam Baslow each had two hits for the Chancellors (23-6).
