SYLMAR -- Junior left-hander Jerry Lobert gave up four hits and struck out eight batters, and the Chancellors junior varsity defeated host and No. 5-seeded Sylmar, 7-0, today in a City Section semifinal game.
The Chancellors (24-6) got two hits each from sophomore second baseman Ryan Wittler, freshman Steven Karkenny and freshman Christian Lopez. Wittler had a double and Lopez drove in three runs.
Chatsworth was left off the tournament during the seeding meeting despite having finished second in the West Valley League. The Chancellors were forced to travel to No. 16-seeded Westchester for a play-in game May 20, which they won, 8-2.
As the new No. 16, the Chancellors would have to play all their games on the road. But it seemed to matter little to the team, which knocked off top-seeded Roosevelt, 9-5, on May 21 and eliminated WVL champion and No. 9-seeded El Camino Real, 1-0, on May 23 before taking out Sylmar on Tuesday.
