Wednesday, May 28, 2008

For the sixth consecutive year, the Chancellors will be playing for the Los Angeles City Section Championship Division title at Dodger Stadium.

The top-seeded and defending champion Chancellors (28-5) made it possible with a 4-2 victory over No. 4 Kennedy (22-11) today in a semifinal game at Chatsworth.

Junior outfielder Michael Renner's run-scoring double in the sixth inning ended a 2-2 tie and he later scored from third base on a botched pickoff try. Renner was three for three, giving him six consecutive hits in two games.

The Chancellors took a 2-0 lead on junior catcher Carlos Escobar Jr.'s two-run home run in the second inning but the Golden Cougars tied it on a two-run home run by Carlos Gonzalez in the fourth inning.

Senior right-hander Trevor Takeyama (13-1) picked up the win in relief.

The six consecutive appearances by the Chancellors in the City title game are a record. They have won seven championships and are looking to break a tie with Fremont and Kennedy for the most titles.

Coach Tom Meusborn has guided the Chancellors to six titles, tying Les Haserot, who won six with Fremont from 1939 to 1948, for the most championships by a coach.
