Saturday, May 31, 2008

LOS ANGELES — For the second year in a row and for the fifth time in the new millennium, the Chancellors are Los Angeles City Section Championship Division champions.

Top-seeded Chatsworth defeated No. 2-seeded Narbonne, 7-2, today at Dodger Stadium to earn the program’s record-setting eighth City title and the seventh under Tom Meusborn, who now has won more championships than any other coach in City history.

Senior right-hander Trevor Takeyama (14-1) became only the fifth Chatsworth pitcher to post that many victories in a season. He gave up five hits, struck out seven and walked three against Narbonne.

Takeyama finished his two-season varsity career with an 18-2 record for a .900 winning percentage that ranks fourth among Chancellors pitchers with 16 decisions or more. The 18 victories place him at No. 10 on the school’s career list.

Chatsworth (29-5) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a run-scoring single by junior third baseman Ryan Cooperstone.

Narbonne (27-7) tied the score, 1-1, in the bottom half of the inning. The Gauchos would have added two runs in the inning had it not been for junior shortstop Kasey Toven, who threw out two runners at the plate.

The Chancellors got doubles from sophomore designated hitter Derek Neely and junior outfielder Andrew Klausmeier, and run-scoring singles from senior second baseman Matt Moreno and senior first baseman James Wharton, who also had one of the team’s six stolen bases.

It was a record sixth consecutive appearance in the title game for the Chancellors, who completed a baseball sweep after the junior varsity team won the championship Thursday with a 3-1 win over Banning, and the 15th all-time, including two third-place games before they were discontinued. The Chancellors have won at least 29 games for six years in a row

The championship game will be broadcast on Channel 36 on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. and replays will follow periodically. Randy Rosenbloom calls the play by play and Eric Sondheimer does the commentating.
