Now that summer ball is over, we’d like to recap what ended up being another amazingly successful season for the Chancellors, which was capped by the program’s second consecutive Los Angeles City Section championship and a record eighth overall.
The Chancellors finished with a 29-5 record and went 14-1 to win their sixth West Valley League title in a row and 27th overall, including 16 under Coach Tom Meusborn, the Daily News’ coach of the year in the region.
Many honors were bestowed on Chatsworth players for their efforts during the season, including the following:
Senior right-hander Trevor Takeyama was selected the City player of the year, WVL co-player of the year, first-team All-State and most valuable player of the City playoffs. He finished with a 14-1 record and had a 1.48 earned-run average and a phenomenal 99 strikeouts against only 13 walks in 85 innings.
It was the third consecutive year that a Chatsworth player was selected City player of the year and the 11th year a Chancellor received the award.
Senior first baseman/pitcher James Wharton was selected WVL co-player of the year with Takeyama and was a first-team All-City selection. After being slowed early in the season because of mononucleosis, Wharton finished with a .347 batting average, 10 home runs and 43 runs batted in, and was 5-1 with a 2.24 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 50 innings.
Junior third baseman Ryan Cooperstone was a first-team All-State, All-City and All-WVL selection. He had a team-best .416 batting average with five triples and tied with Wharton for the team lead in RBIs.
Senior second baseman Matt Moreno (.358, four home runs, a team-high 12 doubles, 30 RBIs) and junior catcher Carlos Escobar Jr. (.316, four home runs, 23 RBIs) were first-team All-City and All-WVL picks; junior shortstop Kasey Toven (.367, team highs with 44 hits and 11 stolen bases) was a first-team All-WVL and second-team All-City selection; junior outfielder Andy Weissberg (.330, seven home runs, 29 RBIs) was a first-team All-WVL pick; and junior outfielder Andrew Klausmeier (.321, six doubles) and junior outfielder Michael Renner (.407, 6-2, 2.21 ERA) were second-team All-WVL selections.
Toven was voted the MVP of the City championship game.
Well-deserved accolades for all.
