Welcome to McNiff's Class at CCHS - Room B7

The "About Me" Section & Your Modeling Career (Pt. II: Model Mayhem, etc.)
Welcome: Welcome to CCHS and welcome to my class. I am an avid gardener who loves the beach, my dog Charlie, and reading books.  I love English so much I even married an English teacher (we have a lot of papers at our house, sometimes!) I have taught at CCHS for more than 20 years teaching all 4 levels of English. I currently teach English 9 Honors and AP English Literature and Composition (12).  I am happy that you are here at CCHS and in my class.

Hensley, Shelbee / Contact Me
Contacting Me and Getting Class Notices:  Overall, the best way to reach me is via e-mail at [email protected] or via the Remind Message System .  When you go to the Remind page, if you enter your phone number we 'text' but don't see each other's phone numbers. If you enter your e-mail, it will go to your e-mail, so remember to check your e-mail responses (that's why I suggest entering your phone number).  If you or your child is in my Honors English9 class, the Remind code is McNiff9H.  If you or your child is in my AP English Literature class, the Remind code is McNiffAP12. By joining Remind, you will also see every Remind message I send out to the students, every reminder of what is due.

Office Hours: My official office hour for the 2024-2025 school year is during 4th period. Since that time frame is so limited, I highly suggest you reach me via e-mail or Remind at any time (see above, Contacting Me and Getting Class Notices ) and I will respond as soon as possible.  I generally work during normal school hours, but am happy to respond beyond those hours as well.  If you send the message at night, I might respond the next day - I promise to respond, though.  Thank you for contacting me.

Class Website: For our classes, we use Schoology as the major platform for student assignments, handouts, and agendas.  When you are in the class, LAUSD will automatically add you to the Schoology account for the class.  If you are a parent, you can register there to see ALL of your student's classes, grades, handouts, etc.  It's a good thing!

AP Summer Assignment for Summer 2024

AP Literature for the 2024-2025 school year does NOT have a Summer Assignment, as it is best if we all begin learning together. The class does have a list of terms, allusions, and vocabulary. See below for that information.

Why don't we have a summer assignment? If some students knew about the assignment and others did not, it creates barriers to learning; therefore, I will see you on August 14th, 2023, the first day of school, and we will learn all about AP Defensible Claims and how to prove our ideas using Literature.  Have a great summer!

AP Literature Terms, Allusions, and Vocabulary
AP Literature's list of terms, allusions, and vocabulary is posted here: Click Here to Open
We use these all year, so if you want to look them up, review them, and learn them over the summer, this would help you feel more confident as the year begins.

Summer Reading
AP Literature promotes reading, as lifelong readers find enjoyment throughout their life. I am enclosing the list of books that have appeared on past AP Exams in case you want to do some reading over the summer: Click Here.
This is in no way mandatory, but some people just want to read some books and these have all been mentioned on the AP Exam. These texts were chosen for their literary merit by College Board. It should be noted that they may contain some sensitive materials.

In addition, when some of the members of the Class of 2024 had me as their 9th Grade Honors English teacher, during the COVID lockdown, and we read the novel Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. This is an AP Literature level text. If you have not read it, consider reading it over the summer. It is in no way mandatory, but it may help you in class discussions as you can reference it as an AP-level example. Click here for Wuthering Heights in varied formats

If you want a suggestion of something you can read over the summer that you might enjoy, send me an e-mail at [email protected] and I'll suggest something.
