An All-City outfielder at Chatsworth High in the early 1970s, Bobby Mitchell moved on to play professional baseball and to manage in the minor leagues.
Mitchell, who just finished his first season as manager of the Chicago Cubs' team in the Arizona League, was selected by the Dodgers out of USC in the seventh round of the June 1977 draft. He played briefly with the Dodgers in 1980 and 1981, and with the Minnesota Twins in 1982 and 1983.
His best season came in 1982, when he batted .249 in 124 games.
In 2006, Mitchell became manager of the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, the Class A California League affiliate of the Angels and stayed with the team through the 2007 season. In 2008 he guided the Angels' triple-A club, Salt Lake, to the Pacific Coast League North Division title. Mitchell managed the Bees (pictured) through the 2010 season.
